Sustainability in logistics with solar energy in Dorsten
For a large-scale logistics centre in Dorsten, we installed a bespoke photovoltaic system and battery storage. Since commissioning in 2023, our complete solution has played an important role in meeting the sustainability targets: it optimises energy efficiency by covering on-site demand and lowering operating costs. Up to 1,300 tonnes of CO2 are saved each year – for greater sustainability in logistics.
Challenge
The extensive logistics centre was a new-build project that placed particular demands on us. We had to integrate into the entire construction process from the outset. No problem: seamlessly integrating our solutions into ongoing operations – or in this case an ongoing build – is our speciality. What made it special: at the time, the logistics property was the first in Germany to be built according to the cradle-to-cradle principle, ensuring a sustainable and environmentally friendly construction method.
One of the greatest challenges was installing the photovoltaic system on the roof, which extends across almost 27,000 m², and on the 30-metre-high section of the building. We therefore used special safety and fastening solutions to mount the 8,264 PV modules securely against storms.
Solution
To guarantee a smooth sequence throughout the construction process, planning was an important part of our bespoke complete solution. The implementation supplies the entire site with energy in the best possible way. Alongside the extensive rooftop PV system, which is partly combined with a green roof, we also installed battery storage to store surplus solar energy and call it up when needed. In this way, we ensure not only sustainability in logistics but also a continuous energy supply – so that the site reaches its sustainability goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050.
